Who we are & what we do

Aston on Trent is a village located within the district of South Derbyshire, approximately 4.5 miles southeast of Derby.

Aston on Trent is a busy thriving village, home to The Village Shop, a Post Office, hair dresser/beauty salon, two village pubs, a primary school and lots of open spaces. We have two facilities for recreation in the village, The War Memorial Hall and The Recreation Centre with Playing Fields; offering various activities on a weekly basis, and also available to hire.

The council meet on the third Tuesday of each month in the Memorial Hall on Chellaston Lane from 7.30pm, Notice of the meeting and agenda are placed in the noticeboard on the Village Green and on the website. Members of the public are welcome to attend and raise concerns or issues in the Public Participation section of the meeting.

Our Annual Parish Council Meeting is held in May.

The Parish Council:
Parish Councils are the first tier of local government and the closest to the community they serve. They are elected bodies with discretionary powers and rights to represent their communities and provide services for them. The number of Councillors is fixed by the local District or Borough Council.

Aston on Trent is served by nine Parish Councillors, the Clerk/Responsible Financial Officer, the Lengthsman and a gardener. The Clerk is a paid officer of the council and it is the Clerk's responsibility to action decisions made by the Parish Council. The Clerk is also responsible for all financial transactions conducted by the Parish Council including presenting the yearly accounts for internal and external scrutiny via auditors.

The Lengthsman and the gardener also hold paid positions within the Parish Council.

Our committees and sub-committees have specific tasks and can have delegated powers. Aston on Trent Parish Council currently has three committees:

• Finance Committee - meet 4 times a year, July, November, January, March/April
• Personnel Committee - meet at least annually for staff appraisal and otherwise as required
• Health & Safety Committee - responsibility of all member Councillors and reported on monthly at full council meetings

There are several areas of responsibility for the Parish Councillors and these are allocated via a responsibility matrix under the following headings:

• Community (Including Aston ACORN, Area Forum, Charities, Community Groups and Neighbourhood Watch)
• Education (including Aston on Trent Primary School and Aston on Trent pre-school)
• Environment (including footpaths, grass cutting, trees, grounds maintenance and the cemetery)
• Recreation (Including the War Memorial Hall, Recreation Centre and Playing Fields)
• Governance (Including the finance and personnel committees, along with liaison with other Parishes, District and County Council, policies and procedures)

As a small Parish Council we are supported by an appointed Parish Clerk and utilise both the Recreation Centre and the Memorial Hall for our meetings.

We have a dedicated gardener for the Village Green and we also have a Lengthsman in the village, who is responsible for litter picking, ensuring footpaths are accessible and safe and general tidying and upkeep of the village.
