FAB is a community volunteer group who self-manage a 4.5 acre woodland and grassland in the former Brickyard Plantation, formerly a c19th gypsum mine. Established in 2012 the group carry out conservation work on behalf of Derbyshire County Council who own the site. Granted Local Nature Reserve status in 2019, we work to a ten-year plan managing a mixed woodland, grass and wild flower meadow plus a thriving pond. Twenty-five species of butterfly, 80 different grasses/ flowers plus a diversity of birds and mammals call this home

Volunteers carry out a range of tasks including planting and felling trees, build habitats for wildlife, hedging and protection of a natural habitat for a wide diversity of flora and fauna. A monthly working day operates each second Tuesday in the month and new volunteers are very welcome; no experience is necessary other than an interest in a natural environment and willingness to engage in practical work. The Local Nature Reserve is open to the public for quiet enjoyment. Dogs are welcome if kept on a lead or under close control. The perimeter earth trails are well maintained and cover a gently incline. Terrain mobility scooters should cope but exercise caution. Rustic seating, information panels and photo points can be found along the trail which should take approx. 20 minutes to complete. Follow us on our Facebook page Aston Brickyard Plantation
